Activities to Prep for Back-to-School

Sep 3, 2024

As summer comes to a close, you can help your child get excited about getting back into school, whether it’s at preschool or home. We have collected some ideas to make this school year start off right.

Role-play

Playing school can help kids work through anything they are worried about and can be especially for fun as they try on different roles, from student to teacher and even class pet. You can even incorporate their stuffed friends or puppets to expand the class. Acting out different scenarios like sharing toys, raising their hands, and practicing skills like tying shoes independently can all help put their minds at ease.

Filling a Backpack

There is something about back-to-school shopping that was always special as a child. Checking each item off the list as it’s added it to the cart and then filling their backpack together at home is one way to get kids excited for the upcoming school year. You can even pair it with a simple service activity and fill an additional backpack for students in need in your community.

Play Dates

Whether they are going to a classroom for the first time or learning from home, playing with other children is a great way to get ready for the school year. Organizing a play date at the school playground can be a great way to help children get to know one another and help the school feel more familiar. Simple games like tag and hide-and-seek burn off energy, give kids an easy way to engage, and build social skills.

Friendship Crafts

If your child is especially nervous about meeting new friends, you can help them build confidence through a fun craft: Friendship bracelets. Using colorful beads and string, they can make some bracelets to take to school with them. As they make new friends or want to break the ice, they can give bracelets to other children.
