3 Fun and Safe Science Experiments to Do with Preschoolers
Kids are never too young to start experimenting and learning about their world! These science experiments are perfect and safe for preschoolers. Please make sure to follow directions and always supervise your children when doing any experiment.
1. Walking water
Materials
- 4 paper towels, folded in half or thirds
- Water
- Blue, yellow, and red food coloring
- 5 small cups
Instructions
- Arrange empty cups in a line.
- Place one side of a paper towel in a cup and the other side in the cup next to it, forming a bridge between the cups. Repeat for all cups.
- Fill alternate cups with water.
- Add food coloring to the cups with water.
- Watch as the water “walks” along the paper towels to fill the empty cups, usually creating a new color as the two colors mix.
2. Static Electricity
Materials
- Balloon
- Small pieces of paper (tissue paper works well)
- Wool cloth (or any other fabric that can generate static electricity)
Instructions
- Rub the balloon against the wool cloth to create static electricity
- Hold the balloon near the small pieces of paper and observe how they are attracted to the balloon or “stick” to it
3. Volcano Eruption
Materials
- Small plastic bottle
- Modeling clay or play dough
- 2/3 cup baking soda
- 1 cup vinegar
- A few drops of dish soap
- Red food coloring
Instructions
- Build a volcano shape around the plastic bottle using the clay or play dough, leaving the top of the bottle open
- Mix vinegar, a few drops of dish soap, and red food coloring in the bottle
- Add a spoonful of baking soda into the bottle and watch the “eruption” as it fizzes and bubbles over

Work on Observation Skills by Playing LilliQuest
Our nature quest helps kids look carefully at the world around them. Encourage questions and observation of the characteristics of plants, animals, and other natural elements.
